Zang Toi presented his collection for spring and summer 2018 during New York Fashion Week (NYFW) on Wednesday afternoon. Silky fabrics tailored into sleek button downs, blazers, and ball gowns together cascaded down the runway. Thick choker necklaces, studded clasps, and pony tails as high as the models’ heels were trending in this line. Green sequins cast intricate patterns across dresses and silk pants, reflecting the stage lights and gleaming back at the audience. Zang Toi’s flowing new collection was full of bishop sleeves, high collars, and printed lace.
The overall color scheme was relatively simple. Black and white were used to pose as a deep contrast against the dark green and light blue, which were seemingly the only two other colors in Toi’s scheme. However, Toi is known for his tiny details of vibrant hues on bold designs. In keeping the colors simple, Toi captures the female silhouette in all its beauty and glamour.
The most illustrative article in this collection was the silver, princess-sleeve open caped gown. The volume of the skirt simulated a princess straight out of a fairytale rather than a model straight off the runway. The dress was ornamented with sequins in the same green that had been shed all throughout the collection. Toi’s 2018 line expressed that next summer’s trends could just be a bit darker, with deep wintry hues recycled over into the spring and summer.
Toi’s inspiration for the S/S collection stemmed from Italy’s Lake Garda region. The style most depictive of the lake was the black cloak that concealed all that was underneath until the model spread out one arm to show silky white fabric with rich green designs. His collection intrigued fashion advocates, who came from all over to see the show.
Zang Toi was born in Malaysia and went on to graduate from the Parsons School of Design in New York. His team produced over 41 new styles and trends for the S/S 2018 show. This season’s keyholes, flowing sleeves, dress suits, and capes were presented in an orderly flow down the runway. Each garment foreshadowed the next. For example, the same pattern of green sequins appeared on silver slacks just before a huge ball gown emerged from behind the curtain decorated with the same pattern and in an identical color scheme.
