Rihanna’s growing business empire does not seem to be stopping any time soon. In addition to recently releasing her beauty line, Fenty Beauty, Rihanna has just released her lingerie line, Savage X Fenty, on Friday.
The lingerie collection has been thriving for multiple reasons, one being that the pieces in the collection are just plain gorgeous. In addition, everything is affordably priced, with prices ranging from $14.50 to $109. Even more, the collection is all about making women feel empowered.
Another reason, and arguably the most important one, is that the collection was not just designed with one type of woman in mind. Instead, it caters to a wide range of women of all different sizes, shapes, and skin tones.
Destiney Bleu, founder of a company called D. Bleu Dazzled that sells bedazzled lingerie, says Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty line owes its success to its inclusivity. She explains that when it comes to lingerie, designers must be aware of their audience. Unfortunately, many lingerie designers only focus on one or very few body types and sizes. The reason Savage X Fenty is such a big deal right now is because it includes all different kinds of women. It focuses on women of various different sizes and skin tones instead of considering diversity as an afterthought. Savage X Fenty is redefining what it means to be “average.” There is not just one version of average, but many versions that need to be acknowledged and discussed. With Savage X Fenty, Rihanna has certainly started this discussion.
With this line, Rihanna proved her passion for reshaping the fashion industry. Like her beauty line, Fenty Beauty, Rihanna wanted to make this lingerie line as inclusive as possible. The collection contains just about every undergarment in existence. There are 36 sizes that range from 32A – 44DD in bras and XS-3X in underwear and sleepwear. There are seven different versions of “nude” for various skin colors. Bleu reveals that surprisingly, it is rare for a new line like this one to contain such a wide range of colors and sizes from the start. She believes other brands will start to adopt this wide range of nude colors once they see how adopting such a range will increase their audience and sales. Bleu emphasizes that inclusivity is “not a trend, [but] a necessity.”
The official site for Savage X Fenty includes models of vastly different builds to show that anyone can wear the collection. Rihanna emphasizes that she is not built like a Victoria’s Secret model, and doesn’t expect all of her customers be built like them, either. Despite not having a Victoria’s Secret model body, she still feels comfortable and sexy in her lingerie, and wants her customers to feel the same way. If customers can look on the website and see models that look like them, they will be able to envision themselves wearing the collection, and realize they don’t need to look a certain way to feel sexy.
In addition to being very inclusive, Savage X Fenty has managed to make women feel empowered. Savage X Fenty stresses the importance of feeling confident enough to try new things while still remaining authentic. Rihanna expressed her thoughts on female confidence to Vogue in her cover story interview in June:
“Savage is really about taking complete ownership of how you feel and the choices you make. As women, we’re looked at as the needy ones, the naggy ones, the ones who are going to be heartbroken in a relationship. Savage is just the reverse. And you know, guys don’t like getting the cards flipped on them — ever.”
Savage X Fenty features pieces that are powerful, sexy, and comfortable. The collection has been greatly commended by both customers and fashion experts for its inclusivity. Savage X Fenty isn’t only about acknowledging all kinds of women, but about empowering them, too. With Savage X Fenty, Rihanna is changing what lingerie is and how it’s marketed. What’s not to love?
