Naeem Khan presented his collection for spring and summer 2018 during New York Fashion Week (NYFW). Eyelet lace, fringe-trimmed fabric, and bedazzled gowns wafted down the Gallery 1 stage at the Skylight Clarkson Square Tuesday afternoon.
Naeem Khan’s new collection leaps into a world of art and culture, showcasing lust-inducing simple tea-party dresses to sleek and shimmering red carpet-worthy gowns. The use of achromatic colors, white and black, kicked off what would turn into a vibrant display of bright yellow and pink embroidered gowns at the end. A staple article in this line would be the pleated denim mini skirt that followed a wave of denim shirts and a classic white denim jacket down the runway. The 2018 collection exhibited a vibe fitting to spring and summer with popping hues of sunshine yellow and floral pink.
Naeem Khan is known to cater to style icons with luxury evening wear that can be seen out at award shows and other red carpet events. He doesn’t forget about the up-and-coming Hollywood youth though. For them, he dreams up dresses that are perfect for the events they’ll soon be hosting.
Khan first moved to the United States from Mumbai in his teens and ended up getting his foot in the door to the fashion industry by serving as Halston’s apprentice. Since then, Khan has been able to craft, drape, and cut fabric all by himself. Khan started his own unique line in 2003. His tutelage has led him to create timeless silhouettes, representative of all the cultures he’s been exposed to. Now living in the heart of the fashion district in New York City, Naeem Khan’s design influence stems from his culture-induced upbringing, surrounded by architecture, art, history, and design everywhere he went.
This season he took inspiration from some new encounters. With his S/S 2018 collection, Kahn pays tribute to the realms of ballets and of exotic, flower-abundant locations. Ballerina-like models practically glided down the runway during this season’s presentation. Each model was decorated with a unique piece of jewelry. A chain came from the side of their head and around the front of their face to hook a sparkly septum on their nostril. These models showed that the ballet isn’t just about dainty dancers; they have to be fierce too and these models were clearly instructed on how to strut out with an intense swagger.
His appreciation of ballet is apparent with an ensemble of looks resembling Swan Lake. He attributes his inspiration to Russian dancer, Anna Pavlova, combined with a tropical vacation. Black and white jewel-adorned dresses along with bright yellow and pink fringe-trimmed sparkling v-neck gowns honed his theme in just 41 outfits. The braided up-dos of the models brought to mind a ballerina’s topknot, while the flowers pinned in their hair alluded to the tropics.
