What comes to your mind when you think of high fashion? Magnificent clothing? Fabulous gowns? High-end blouses? Most of the time when we think of higher end fashion we think of expensive clothing designs produced by top name designers.
Designer, Duane Topping, is putting a new face to the term high fashion. Rather than looking like a fancy designer you would associate wit high couture looks, Topping resembles more of the biker guy you would run into at a local bar in your town. But, don’t let his looks deceive you, he has the biggest love for fashion and is not afraid to tell you all about his passion for it.
He truly enjoys designing al different types of clothing and is one of the top designers in Denver right now. Designing pieces is his escape from the real world, a time for him to put all is energy into something he truly loves and escapes reality for a few hours each day.
Duane has always loved fashion, but if you look into his background you may not see that. He never went to a fashion school or took any sewing lessons. To much surprise, he actually was a military veteran who served three tours in Iraq.
He had a strong desire to serve his country but had to unfortunately medically retire from the military in 2012 and ever since has wrestled with PTSD. Adjusting from such a traumatic experience back in to the real world took a huge toll on him mentally. That’s when fashion became so big in his life. Fashion gave him a distraction and an outlet away from the world. He decided he was going to teach himself how to sew and has never stopped creating clothing since.
Having this form of stress relief allowed him to function in society again. He knows he is not the typical looking fashion designer nor does has the background experience like some, but he won’t let that stop him.
Creating all different looks for women of all body types has allowed him to move on from his past and put his energy into creating something magnificent. Coming from such a rough background, he never has been in touch with his “feminine side”. Now fashion has aloud him to channel that and give him a totally different view of the world. It allows his soft side to come through instead of being the tough guy he thought he always had to be.
Topping began getting more serious abut designing fashion and decided to go back to school. He is currently in his last semester with a double major in creative writing and women’s studies. When he is not in school he spends all his spare time putting finishing touches on all his latest projects. He plans on having a fashion shoot at the !6th Street Mall in Denver on May 20th where he hopes to display diversity to the community.
As for has his future aspirations go, he wants to eventually open up his own boutique filled with all of his designs. Until that time comes, Duane wants to continue designing clothes and work on finishing out his degree. He is a true inspiration for all military veterans who may have gone through the same struggles once they finished serving. He knows that finding his true passion fro designing clothing has helped him cope and wants to inspire others to find through true passion, even if it is something they never even imagine before hand.
Duane’s newest clothing line is called Topping Design Fashion and its slogan is “fashion for all woman”. For anyone interested in seeing more of his designs you can visit his website at toppingdesign.com.
