Let’s play a little guessing game. If I asked you to pick a price of a normal gown celebrities wear on red carpets, how much would you say? A couple thousand, few hundred thousand, maybe even a million? For red carpets, celebrities try to choose he most exquisite gowns. Most of the time they are custom made to fit the celebrities exact style needs. Having such an amazing dress designed by a top notch designer does not come with a low price tag.
Designer Michael Costello knows the work that goes into making a dress for such highly publicized celebrities. This designer has dressed everyone from Meghan Trainer, to Fifth Harmony and Ciara. Every dress he designs is breathtaking and done with amazing detail. With all the work he puts into every dress, one would assume the price tag would be high.
That assumption may be true for some of his past dresses, but not for his newest designs. A few months back Costello got a lot of talk started when Kyle Jenner came out in a curve-hugging red dress designed by him. But the talk was not about the amazing dress, it was more about the price of the dress. The dress was priced for $350, a small number compared to the prices of his other gowns.
This new dress design was part of his new collab with DesigNow. DesigNow is a fashion community and e-commerce that has a goal of bringing forth emerging designers and mainstay brands who want to construct more price-conscious pieces.
When Costello first heard about DesigNow he thought it was a very unique and modern company. He has a friend who also works with DesigNow who was able to help him get in touch with the company and set up meetings. When he first met with the creative team they decided to make designs that were more affordable for customers who don’t have enough money to pay for big-name designer dresses but want to look like there wearing them.
DesigNow gives assistance to new developing designers by helping them break into the industry. They offer monthly challenges, internships, and have school partnerships with Parsons, F.I.T. and Pratt. Michael also wants to be someone who can give guidance to new designers and help give them the tricks to become successful in the design world.
He sees so many young designers who have no resources and are so unsure what needs to be done to be successful. Every week he gets emails and DM’s from designers asking if they can shadow or intern with him.
Not only is Costello a designer for DesigNow but he is a judge as well. Coming from the Project Runway world, he understands what it is like to be critiqued by leaders in the fashion world. But, getting this critique from such big names allowed him to gain so much knowledge. It is not everyday you can get insight and input from such big name designers and stylists, so hearing what they had to say about his work helped him better his designs for the future.
As a designer, it is easy to change your style. There is some people who stick to their true aesthetic, but often designers evolve over time and change the work they produce. He likes to tell yell designers to stay true to who you are but still listen to critique and don’t be afraid to change some of their designs.
Michael feels like everyone he works with at DesigNow Is truly a family to him. The people at DesigNow care about everyone they work with and really want to see all the designers succeed. If you work with this company, you can be guaranteed you are in good hands.
If you are a new emerging designer, Costello has some advice; he says feedback is never easy but taking in all the criticism is a part of learning. When he first appeared on Project Runway he got a lot of criticism for not having formal training, but he did not let the critiques stop him. There are always going to be others who are older than you and have more experience, so you can not get discouraged if progress does not come as fast as you want.
Take advice, gain knowledge, and keep creating.
