She is a Chinese fashion designer and owner of two clothing labels: EXCEPTION de Mixmind, a ready-to-wear line started in 1996 and retailed in China; and WUYONG, an haute couture line founded in 2006. In 2007 she penetrated the fashion Industry on a global level. Ma Ke is among the youngest of the first generation of Chinese fashion designers who have received international acclaim, and she is the first Chinese to show at Paris Haute Couture. Ma Ke is best known abroad for her two WUYONG collections. Her designs are celebrated for their use of environmentally friendly fabrics and recycled materials, and for their manufacture using traditional dyeing, weaving and embroidery techniques, most notably those of the Dong people of Southern China. Taking discarded items such as an old paint covered sheet Ma Ke transforms it into a dress, the cracked paint creating a beautiful pattern on the garment, and an old tarpaulin is constructed into a coat of magnificent volume. For Ma Ke this focus on personal interpretation and transformation is a way of highlighting the importance of the individual and the value of life.
As a leading fashion designer in China and being named one of the most influential women to internationally penetrate the fashion industry she still displays a humble, organic and non-sealant attitude toward where the industry will lead her next. When she was asked if she had future plans to release her clothing into further international societies, she replied “ I will let nature take it’s course.”
