The main topic of conversation at the Business of Fashion’s inaugural invitation-only summit, titled BoF West, was the future of fashion and beauty businesses.
Two of the keynote speakers at the event, Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian, took part in a panel discussion on “Creating Cultural Moments.” They discussed the advantages of living in Los Angeles and how they have grown the Kardashian empire.
Kris Jenner spoke about what it’s like to manage the careers of six children, and how she has managed to guide successful family brands like KKW Beauty, Kylie Cosmetics, and the Kendall+Kylie collection.
Kim Kardashian West described her role in the beauty industry, discussed her makeup brand KKW Beauty, and dropped some hints as to what audiences can expect to see in the upcoming season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. She also explained the triumphs and struggles of running a company via social media. Oddly, her trick to running a successful company is to not pay attention to what the consumer wants. Instead, she focuses on what feels right to her; what she wants. Kardashian West said if one owns one’s own business, and said business is run through social media, one has the power to do what one wants.
The success of a brand often comes from influence, and if one is already a popular influencer on social media, people will trust what said influencer has been working on.
In addition, Kim revealed the most influential person in her life when it comes to style: her husband, Kanye West.
Kim disclosed that Kanye helped her to find her way in the fashion world. She explained that she didn’t have good fashion sense until she met him. He cleaned out her closet with her until she had two pairs of shoes left, then filled her closet with all new things. Her closet was filled with designers like Lanvin, Givenchy, and Versace, which Kim had never heard of before.
Thank you @donatella_versace for designing this stunning dress and thank you to the @versace team! This dress was inspired by the iconic gold chainmail and cross designs from the 1997 Versace couture show & thank you @lorraineschwartz for the beautiful jewels! #Versace pic.twitter.com/vK7PSZ7LDS

Kanye made a big effort to teach her about fashion. He gave her one of his fashion books by Carine Roitfeld, and told that her Carine would style her one day. Now, Kim and Carine are good friends.
Later, Kim went to Paris and connected with designers like Riccardo Tisci, the chief creative officer of Burberry, and Olivier Rousteing, creative director of Balmain. When Kim first arrived in Paris, no one really wanted to dress her. When she met Riccardo Tisci, however, he took a chance on her and taught her a great deal about fits, cuts, and how clothing should be worn.
It’s safe to say that Kanye West has had a very positive impact on Kim’s style, as she is now one of the most influential style icons in the fashion industry.
