Muslim-American entrepreneur Melanie Elturk always struggled to find the perfect headpiece to wear over her fashionable outfits. That’s why in 2010, she created Haute Hijab with her husband, Ahmed Zedan, an online brand for other women who wanted the freedom to express both their religion and their personal style without compromising one for the other.
The site offers both a shopping paradise for Muslim women as well as a community in which hijab styling advice and trends can be shared. It’s a safe space for all hijab-wearing ladies around the globe to explore new ways of taking pride in their culture and religion, as well as their individuality by finding a novel collaboration of fashion and heritage.
This season, Elturk is going one step further with her fashion endeavors by offering something that has never been seen before: luxury hijabs. Muslim headwear will now have its own haute couture category like every other luxury fashion design. Most of the regular pieces found on Haute Hijab are fairly inexpensive, averaging around $65 per hijab. In their exclusive luxury collection, hijabs ranging from $260-$325 will target high-end customers and challenge the notion that the headpiece is merely a religious garb. By making luxury hijabs the norm, the designer sends a message of pride in Muslim design and culture. The hijab is no longer an oppressive or derogatory symbol, but a sign of opulence and elegance for Muslim women everywhere.
Haute Hijab is also innovating the hijab industry by offering a wide range of different styles and functions for each of their headpieces. The hijabs sold are divided into categories of Everyday, Professional, and Formal, breaking the stereotype that simply one type of hijab fits all occasions. An even more functional “athleisure” hijab for fit Muslim ladies may be in the makings, according to an exclusive interview with Popsugar.
Currently, Haute Hijab also has a beautiful pure silk hijab collection ranging in headpieces in sleek, navy blues to romantic pinks covered in rosettes. The Essential Silk Hijab comes in ten gorgeous shades all made of 100% fine silk, and is part of their formal collection.
