Fashion is all about taking risks. No one ever made the best-dressed list by wearing the same old boring clothes from everyone season. Sometimes these risks can lead to fashion flops, but in the case where they don’t, these risks can lead to some monumental moments in fashion.
Designers are well aware of the risks they must take to excel in the fashion industry. A collection can not end up looking like one of your competitors, and to make sure that doesn’t happen it involves thinking outside the box. Designers have to think ‘what do my consumers want?’ or ‘what is something that has never been seen yet’?
Answering these questions causes them to get creative with their designs. But sometimes designers might end up going too far. Some latest fashion trends we have recently been seeing lead us to believe that some designers might be trying too hard to be different. Recently, odd trends that have been emerging in the fashion world have gotten ridicule and are being mocked by many people who are active in this business.
Nordstrom is the top runner for starting this odd fashion era by recently selling a pair of men’s jeans for $425 that look like they have mud splashed on them. Another label is TopShop, who just released “clear panel” jeans. These jeans have a clear plastic panel that is completely see-through right at the knees. But why are these high-end brands that are known for spectacular designs releasing such ridiculous new pieces?
Many fashion analysts feel that this is not just a public stunt to get you in their doors, but rather just a trend taken to far. This season in fashion, there has been a big calling to revamp denim which is leading to many designers trying to come up with the newest and most creative ways to do so. They want to try and take the average jean to the next level and are coming up with any way possible to make that happen.
So maybe it’s just that? Designers trying to take a new trend and put a spin on it? There have been style trends of ripped and shredded jeans where many people were basically destroying jeans to get a washed out look, so what makes the mud jeans any different?
There is also much thought that the designers are trying to play into the new age of social media by sharing extreme designs to get shared around the web and reach all different types of people. This has been done by many other designers, who have released crazy and outrageous pieces just so they could get them spread around by consumers and have people talking. It plays into our latest online culture where everyone is looking for something new and attention-grabbing to photograph. People will do almost anything now to get more likes or followers.
Both TopShop and Nordstrom have yet to comment about these crazy new designs or what their intention was behind them. Whatever their reasoning behind these products are, they achieved the goal that designers want and that is to get people talking about your clothing.
When consumers hear and see these new designs they spread the word and go on the websites to check them out. Even if they do not end up buying these new pieces, it gets people looking at the other products and could lead to them buying something else.
So it looks like both Topshop and Nordstrom have outsmarted us all. People may not be fond of these new designs but it is getting people to talk about their brands which are increasing their awareness to the public. All in all, they win.
