As a part of Calvin Klein’s partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the visual arts, Calvin Klein released a collection based on Warhol’s 1963 silent, experimental film, Kiss.
Born in 1928, Warhol was an American artist, director, writer, and producer who was a leading member of the visual arts movement, pop art. He often used media including painting, silk screening, photography, film, and sculpture to explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertising. Warhol had an appreciation for Hollywood glamour. He once stated in a book called Uptight: The Velvet Underground Story, “I love Los Angeles. I love Hollywood. They’re so beautiful. Everything’s plastic, but I love plastic. I want to be plastic.” Warhol was also openly gay and his sexuality was often reflected in his works. Warhol produced erotic photos and drawings of naked men and some of his most famous works draw from gay underground culture.
His film, Kiss, was created to depict real people in real relationships. For over 50 minutes, Warhol’s film depicted various couples kissing for nearly 4 minutes at a time, breaking Hollywood’s law which limited the length of a kiss scene. The film focused on couples of all gender, racial, and sexual orientations. Kiss challenged Hollywood films for their picturesque, white, straight, couples. Warhol was able to change how love is perceived in the public eye and promote and create acceptance for nonmainstream couples.
Calvin Klein has been working with The Andy Warhol Foundation for years and have created pieces inspired by Warhol’s prints and photographs; however, none were as provocative as the newest release from this collaboration. The new collection features two images from Kiss, printed on classic Calvin Klein silhouettes such as the t-shirt, wifebeater and Klein’s various collection of underwear.
