The New York Fashion Week is back with designers from around the world showcasing their latest Spring/Summer 2020 Collection. The Fashion Week is supposed to take place in New York City on various platforms from September 4th through September 12th, 2019. Just like every season, CAAFD ( The Council of Aspiring American Fashion Designers) have announced their series of group showcases slated for New York Fashion Week. While there are some designers from the past seasons returning to NYFW through CAAFD, the council has also unveiled six new fresh faces that will be showcasing their collection at NYFW for the first time with the help of CAAFD. These new designers are Moon Chang, A Humming Way, Farida Temraz’s Temraza, María Sonia, Yufash and Phoenix. A little look into these diverse set of designers as they make their debut at the NYFW.
Moon Chang is selected as part of the CAAFD IM’Possible Challenge Program which is designed to empower and motivate recent graduates in the fashion industry. Moon earned her MFA from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2019. Her work has been featured in Vogue Italia, L’Officiel, Flawless, WWD, Zinc, Neu Neu Media, Notes, and Yahoo, to name a few. The S/S 2020 collection, “Hybrid Beauty” shows Moon Chang’s personal story featuring her PTSD experience.
With ‘A Humming Way,’ the brand’s entrepreneur and curator Sweta Agrawal showcases her passion to create designs that appeal to the strong and confident Indian woman. The CAAFD Collective Showcase will feature the great designs inspired by the rich Rajasthani heritage.
Farida Temraz’s Temraza has gained a lot of attention in the past year with the brand’s pieces being seen on the red carpet at the Oscars, Grammy, Emmy’s, SAG Awards and many others. CAAFD has handpicked it as one of the emerging brands this season. Temraza offers collections of Haute Couture, women’s ready-to-wear, evening wear, and bridal dresses. Ms. Temraz is the youngest Egyptian designer to successfully participate in the London Fashion Week, Los Angeles Fashion Week, and New York Fashion Week twice.
CAAFD was impressed with this young designer’s work. Maria Sonia has hands-on experience in cutting, sewing and designing fabric prints. The S/S 20 Collection is inspired by her roots. The collection is based on the Hand Made, fusing native fabrics with others such as Gaza, tulle, organza, taffeta, using technological processes, achieving a perfect combination of the autochthonous and the contemporary to haute couture. She also wants to focus on the evolution and empowerment of women through her collection at the NYFW.
Kadri Klampe is the founder and designer of the brand, ‘Yufash.’ The brand and the designer is part of the CAAFD’s incubate/nurturing program. This will be her second showcasing at the NYFW and with CAAFD. The brand has been made for the confident and powerful women of the world. All the garments are fabricated exclusively in England. The designer is also famous for having her brand’s pieces featured on the hit television series Scream Queens.
Phoenix Ba pursued her fashion design and technique education at George Brown College and has work experience in Asia, Europe, and North America. Combining aesthetic judgments and technical skills, her designs are presented as a means for self-expression that each garment has her own story and characters. Ba aims to think-outside-the-box and creates elegant and timeless women wear with creative designs, variegated non-conventional materials, and surface textile techniques. The line focuses on femininity, passion, and confidence and contains one-of-a-kind outfits that suit women from different cultural backgrounds with different voices and attitudes.
