It goes without saying that becoming a fashion designer requires a good deal of hard work and learning.
Though it is extremely beneficial to attend school for this profession, it is not necessary.
Dedication, hard work, and education are all you need, whether you go to school or ask google. These four tips will definitely help if your goal is to become a designer.
1. Technical Tools
First, the most important step to becoming a fashion designer is to learn how to effectively communicate your idea or vision of what you want to be designed. To do this, use a “Tech Pack.” This makes it easier for manufacturers to follow the details of designs without having to refer back to the designer several times. Making a tech pack is not common knowledge, and as such it will take time in order to learn this skill.
Consulting with a technical designer can be useful as well. If you are a DIY type of person, it may be best to invest in a technical designer certificate from an accredited college.
2. Learn To Negotiate
Many people fail to realize that the prices that manufacturers give you are not set in stone. You can negotiate!
The best way to properly negotiate pricing is to first find out why the minimum is what it is. Manufacturers can charge for the cost of setting up, or for spending time on your line while they have bigger clients to attend to.
Once you know the reason, find a compromise that can still be beneficial to both parties. If your current manufacturer does not seem willing to negotiate current the minimum, in neither cost nor quantity, finding an alternative manufacturer might be best.
3. Understand Timing In The Fashion Industry
Staying on season can mean starting your design and manufacturing process a year before it will debut. For example, a line for a Fall/Winter collection (August to November) will usually be designed during the time that Spring and Summer collections are being presented.
4. Promote Your Clothing Line
Advertising and marketing skills are other very important ingredients in developing a successful brand. Make sure to have an online presence that connects with your target audience. Having a website is where someone can go and become informed regarding your brand. Make sure your company’s website is easy to use and to understand, and has contact information listed for business inquiries or questions. Targeting a specific community is often beneficial. Take advantage of trade shows, showrooms and fashion shows all while finding other strategic ways to reach your audience.
