“New Hollywood” according to Vanity Fair Magazine is all female, all skinny and all white; at least that’s the message sent from the publication’s March 2010 cover.   There is not a woman of color to be found on the front, but inside tucked between the pages is an interview with Academy Award Nominee Gabourey Sidibe.  The 300+ plus-size, dark –skinned 26-year-old could walk away with an Oscar on March 7th.  Affectionately known as “Gabby” Sidibe, the first-time actress will be competing for the Best Actress Oscar against movie veterans with combined experience of more than half a century – Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock.

Gabby
Gabby explosive performance in Precious  blew her onto the film festival circuit in 2009.  Her heartbreaking portrayal has earned her  innumerable accolades, and nominations at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Gabby’s confidence on the red carpet has been stellar and she has garnered attention for her fashion selections.

The comedienne Mo’Nique, also a plus-size woman, could walk away with an Oscar for her supporting role as the evil mother of the Precious.  Redefining racial and body image stereotypes, these women are shattering the A-list actress mold along with rapper, movie actress and Cover Girl Queen Latifah.

According to esteemed image consultant, Natalie Jobity of Elan Image Management, “plus-sized women need to understand their figure by enhancing assets and camouflaging flaws.  Fabrics that move with the body, ruching, and shapewear are essentials.” These Oscar nominated superstars certainly understand this philosophy.  Mo’Nique and Gabourey Sidibe have been setting red carpets ablaze, proving that glamour comes in all shapes and sizes.

It may have been raining at the 2010 Golden Globes, but Gabourey Sidibe beamed in her emerald chiffon Kevan Hall dress.  The flowing fabric and jeweled encrusted empire waist were perfect choices for her body type.  Natalie Jobity of Elan Image Management says, “Gabourey’s confidence goes along way.”

MoniqueMo’Nique, 42, had a breakout year in 2009 with her unnerving performance in Precious.  The jovial comedian transformed herself into a verbally and physically abusive monster for this pivotal role.  Her extraordinary efforts have earned her a Golden Globe, a SAG Award, and an Oscar nomination for “Best Supporting Actress.”  For Mo’Nique’s winning moment at the Golden Globes, she was decked out in a strapless Grecian style dress by Reem Acra.  Her subdued hair and make-up gave way to the shimmering champagne splendor of the ensemble. To accept her Screen Actors Guild award, Mo’Nique was simply chic in a short sleeved Badgley Mischka gown with a plunging V-neckline. The ecru dress was beautifully accented with beaded embellishments on the sleeves. Image consultant, Natalie Jobity believes, “Mo’Nique embraces her curves and owns her look.” We cannot wait to see what she dons at the Oscars.

Latiffa

This month plus-size Rapper and Hip-Hop Royalty Queen Latifah, 39, is on the big screen with an ensemble cast in romantic comedy, Valentine’s Day.  She burst onto the scene in the late eighties as one of the few female rappers.  Then in the nineties, Queen Latifah started to venture into television and films with notable characters in Living Single and Set It Off. In 2003, Latifah earned her “Best Supporting Actress” Oscar nomination for her scene-stealing role in the musical Chicago.

After this distinguished honor, Queen Latifah injected a higher level of sophistication and polish to her red carpet style.  For her hosting duties at the 2009 People’s Choice Awards, Latifah looked radiant in an amethyst silk chiffon gown with a bejeweled neckline. The refreshing regal hue of Georges Chakra’s creation complimented her complexion beautifully. At last year’s Oscars, Queen Latifah opted for a classic silhouette in a one-shouldered satin dress accented with Swarovski crystals.  The streamlined George Chakra design masterfully flattered her curves.  Jobity affirms, “Queen Latifah has great poise and always dresses appropriately for her figure.”
