talian style meets whimsical chic for Andrea Pompilio's eponymous line. This up-and-coming designer has worked for such powerhouses as Alessandro Dell'Acqua, Prada, Calvin Klein and Yves Saint Laurent. He launched his first collection for Autumn/Winter 2011 and was the winner of Pitti Immagine's coveted "Who's On Next" award-part of which afforded his current collection to be showcased at Pitti 81. Andrea's strong suit is knowing how to put pieces together; from basics in rich colors to nubby knits and printed blazers, there is a sense of carefree random quirkiness that comes off as pulled together and nonchalant. Like most Italians, Mr. Pompilio is a master of color; terra-cotta, concrete, mustard, oxblood, peacock and slate blend like a weathering painting. The construction and execution of his more basic garments are exemplary of his strength as a designer, while remaining understated and decidedly Italian. Andrea Pompilio gives major fashion houses a run for their money because his unique sense of humor and charm makes his line stand apart, as evidenced by his current collection featuring Elmer Fudd-inspired hats, fleece belts, recurring chimp imagery and raccoon tails, while still remaining accessible and wearable.
