Diane Kruger invoked memories of Old Hollywood glamour when she attended the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, as a nominee for her role in Inglourious Bastards. And who was she wearing? Jason Wu, of course. Rachel Weisz won the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards for Best Actress in London this week for her critically acclaimed role in the latest incarnation of A Streetcar Named Desire. And who was she wearing? Jason Wu, of course.
What a difference a year makes. Who knew that Jason Wu would sky-rocket to fashion fame on the wings of the White House inauguration. The Taiwan-born Wu, made a wish that the First Lady Michelle Obama would wear his work. And his dream came true when the newly inaugurated President Barack Obama took his wife, Michele, in his arms and danced at the Inaugural Ball, with the First Lady looking lovely in that white Wu gown. From that moment on Jason Wu became a household name and entered the fashion world’s lexicon forever.

Wu, who is only 27, has won acclaim with his classic and romantic haute couture designs. Working with dolls as his mannequins Wu, when only nine-years-old, began learning to sew and draft patterns. His graduation from New York’s prestigious Parson’s School of Design sent him on his way into the fashion world. Enchanted by the photography of Richard Avedon and the classic hourglass silhouettes of the female form Wu began to work his material magic using luxurious fabrics like chiffon and silk. His classic eye gave us glimpses back in time to days when women were always polished to perfection – think 50s, 60s and Jackie O and you’ve got the fashion feeling of Wu.
While we are waiting for the Fall/Winter 2010 Collections, Wu has already peeped his design hand by pulling off a pre-season peek. His time traveling through the fashion archives has landed him in the 60s and 70s with the masculine tailored jackets and airline stewardess uniform look. For the first time Wu is working with leather in this collection and in true form he is keeping it feminine with cute bolero jackets that flatter the female form.

This spring we can look forward to the Wu Aviator sunglass collection. This designer has emerged, and taken flight off the runway and is off in the skies of fashion history. Jason, we whom you have wowed, salute you!
