ong days turn to long nights. Your breath is thick in the chilly air. Driving out of the city, the rich hues of Autumn dance in the creaking trees. The current that runs through Norton & Sons' E. Tautz line for their Fall/Winter 2011 collection is an awareness of the cold that the new seasons bring, and an accommodation of that cold into the stylish gentleman's wardrobe choices. Outerwear features heavily in the collection, as it did in seasons past: there are a number of greatcoats, pea coats, leather jackets, and other shields from the wind and rain. Yet the world does not end as the temperature drops. Life endures, and E. Tautz celebrates that endurance through the strong use of color in statement pieces, such as a bright yellow pea coat or a scarlet sport coat. Burgundy seems to be the color of the season, E. Tautz employing it in trousers, cardigans, and sweaters. Like the red wine it resembles, burgundy seasons and enhances the wardrobe of the E. Tautz gentleman, never overwhelming but always leaving a strong impression.
The scarf is a strong accessory throughout the collection, as might be expected. However, E. Tautz also leans heavily on the turtleneck sweater this season, rendering it in both chunky wool and fine cashmere, experimenting with its fisherman's heritage as well as its evolution into sportswear. Dress shirts are buttoned to their top button to continue this motif- all collars are closed to best block out the cold. E. Tautz does not tell us to be dour. There is still room for playfulness in the Autumn and Winter. However, as gentlemen of the world, we must be sober and self-aware, our comportment steadfast against the harsh climate of the coming months.
