It’s no secret that people in the fashion industry are changing their habits and becoming more sustainable in the ways they are making clothing. Everyone fears what could happen to our planet if we continue to abuse it, which is causing many to make changes. People are taking steps to make sure we keep the earth as clean as possible. Many brands and retailers have publicly come out with different ways they are making their clothing lines eco-friendly.
Within the industry, there seems to be a growing demand for material that will last longer and not cost harm to the environment. The fashion industry is even having a global conference where they decided in coming together to shine light on sustainable clothing, with the help of media. The people within the industry want to reduce their carbon footprint. Right now the fashion industry is the second largest polluting sector, coming right behind oil in pollution with 3500,000 tons of clothing that end up in landfills each year.
Higher end brands are the big ones capitalizing on this new demand for sustainable products. One fashion designer, Tom Cridland, said he set up an eco-friendly clothing company that now has profits in the millions per year. The clothing in his line has a guarantee to last thirty years, which has received attention from big-name celebrities who have even begun wearing this line.
He feels clothing should last a significant period of time. Most clothing is starting to last only a couple years which is making people feel that short lasting clothing is now normal. Many stores try to bargain their clothing and get it made in developing countries so that the production is cheap. Places such as Bangladesh are big in this sector, but the factories that produce the inexpensive clothing are in terrible conditions. In 2013, there was a collapse in one factory that was producing clothing, where a building fell on more than 1,000 workers.
Incidents such as this one in the Bangladesh factory increase the public’s conscience for safely made and environmentally friendly products. Before incidents like this, many people did not think about the idea of environment and humanity, and instead were just thinking about style and income. Now people have opened their eyes and are beginning to think about the human element of it all; leading them to look into the treatment of the ones who are making the clothing.
The main question is if the workers are being treated fairly and if they are working in significant conditions. It is more than just style behind the clothing; the natural elements are beginning to play a huge role in it now.
High-end designers are the ones capitalizing the most but they aren’t the only ones who are backing up the new wave of eco-friendly clothing. Retail stores such as H&M and other places similar are also beginning to turn green. Many stores are trying to aim for having one hundred percent of their clothing to be sustainable in the next few years.
A manager for H&M spoke out about the costs that change when switching to more sustainable clothing. The manager, Catarina Midby, said that even though it cost them more to make this clothing they will not be charging their consumers more for it. They feel that the extra investment in making their clothing sustainable will pay off in the long run and it will make them be a better company overall.
Brands and other retailers such as H&M are finally realizing that it is not all about profits and the way that clothing looks. Clothing should be able to last long and not be made cheap by workers in terrible conditions.
If all labels begin to change to eco-friendly clothing it will better the environment in the long wrong. This new trend is moving the world in the right direction.
