The winners for the 2017 British Fashion Council and the Vogue Designer Fashion Fund were Mother of Pearl and Palmer Harding. They won the award jointly because they both helped in supporting fashion houses that are emerging who need that extra push. It is great news that both of them won.
The Fashion Fund was founded in 2008 and they share their mark with America’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, due to Anna Wintour founding the American version back in 2003. The LVMH Prize that was founded by Delphine Arnault has also been collaborating with London’s own Fashion Fund. The prize was $200,000 pounds. Much of it was for hiring high-end consultants to help the businesses grow with e-commerce, merchandising, expansion and accounting. The contribution made quite an impact. Two winners won this year, and the Fashion Fund wanted to make it so at least three people won, which is awesome.
The organizers of the award were skeptical, considering there are a handful of small businesses that have the potential to take off and fluctuate. Sometimes, debuting your business on social media does not go as well as one might think. This award show is made so that designers will have a chance to be recognized on an already recognized event. These are businesses trying to develop long-term growth.
At times, senior executives are hired that the small businesses cannot afford. This also leads to the senior executive spending more on ideas he or she has that are not within the companies budget. The effects of Brexit are also tough on the fashion industry, making it difficult for up-and-coming businesses in London to flourish. That is another reason why the prize money was increased and so were the winners. It is incredible to see a strong team come and support each other in such a competitive environment.
The prize winners this year were announced at a cocktail party in London at a place called Hotel Cafe Royal. Shrimps, Toogood, Osman, Huishan Zhang, and Sophie Hulme were also in the race. Last year, the winners were Sophia Webster, Erdem, Christopher Kane, and Mary Katrantzou.
The brand that were named at this Fund were companies that Mother of Pearl and Palmer Harding felt that would do well when they get their business floating. The companies have a strong vision for what they want and know what they need to succeed in a highly-trained setting.
Mother of Pearl was established in 2002 by Maia Norman, the former designer of Damien Hirst. Mother of Pearl was growing more and more thanks to Amy Powney, who started off as an intern and worked her way up to creative director. Amy has been designing clothes that have been 90’s inspired, something that reigns close to her childhood. She is truly thankful for the award and hopes that now, it will boost business even more.
Palmer Harding was founded in 2012 by Levi Palmer and Matthew Harding. They try and work with contemporary clothing styles and have recently teamed up with John Lewis’ Modern Rarity Line. It has been a big year for them and they are pleased that they won an extravagant award like this one.
